Travel Smarter: Tips for On-Time Arrivals and Navigating the REAL ID Law
Hey, travelers! Let’s talk about two essential things you need to know before your next flight: arriving at the airport on time and getting your REAL ID ready for travel.
Airport Arrival Times:
- Domestic Flights: Aim to get to the airport at least 2 hours before your flight. This gives you plenty of time to check in, drop off your bags, and breeze through security—no last-minute stress! Keep in mind, lines can be longer than expected, especially during busy travel periods. Learn more about ideal airport arrival times here.
- International Flights: For international travel, plan to arrive at least 4 hours ahead of your flight. This extra time accounts for customs, passport checks, and longer security lines, ensuring you stay relaxed and ready for your journey. Find out more about international travel tips here.
The REAL ID Law: What You Need to Know:
- Deadline to Know: The REAL ID Act kicks in on May 7, 2025. After this date, you’ll need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license (or an alternative ID) to board domestic flights or enter federal buildings. Get all the details here.
- What is REAL ID? It’s a new standard for state-issued IDs, created to boost security. A REAL ID-compliant card will have a star in the top right corner—make sure yours has it!
- Why It Matters: Without a REAL ID, you won’t get through TSA checkpoints for domestic flights. If you haven’t updated your ID yet, now’s the time to visit your DMV. You can also use a passport as an alternative.

Tips for a Smooth Journey:
- Check if your ID has the star or if you need to upgrade.
- Plan your airport logistics to avoid any last-minute panic.
- Take advantage of online check-in to save time and skip the lines.
By getting REAL ID-ready and planning your airport arrival times wisely, you’ll be set for a stress-free travel experience. Happy and safe travels! ✈️
